Calling All Women In Criminal Law
Last week, I launched the Women’s Association of Criminal Lawyers – British Columbia, otherwise known as WACL-BC.
This peer-driven, non-profit organization is geared towards the advancement of women in criminal law.
Although women have made great strides in the practice of law over the years, the criminal bar remains a male dominated space. Very few women practice in criminal law, and even fewer practice in criminal defence. Those of us who do choose criminal law as a career when leaving law school are significantly more likely to drop out as compared to our male counterparts.
WACL-BC recognizes the unique challenges that face women in the criminal bar. It is committed to change and to the creation of a more equitable legal bar.
Those of us who have been involved in WACL-BC from the beginning also recognize that women are more powerful together, than they are apart. This organization is therefore striving to break down the barriers that separate us and allow us to come together.
