Laura P. Cheevers B.A., LL.B.
ASSOCIATE LAWYER
Laura Cheevers, criminal defence lawyer, was born and raised in Vancouver. After high school, Laura moved to Victoria to complete her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Victoria. In addition to be Canadian, Laura has citizenship in both England and Ireland. After completing her Bachelor of Arts, Laura moved to Dublin, Ireland, to complete an internship with the Irish Government. There, Laura worked directly with a Teachta Dála (read: Member of Parliament) for County Kerry in an effort to secure further funding from the European Union for local projects.
While living in Ireland, Laura decided that she wanted to pursue a degree in Law. Having English citizenship, she applied to universities in the United Kingdom and chose to attend the University of Surrey. There, she obtained a Bachelor of Laws. With the Brexit campaign in full swing and the vote to leave the European Union secured, Laura chose to return to Canada. Upon her return, Laura immediately passed all of her Canadian equivalency exams and completed her articles in the province of British Columbia. Laura was called to the bar in late 2019.
During her articles, Laura appeared in courts throughout the lower mainland on various charges and matters. She has helped clients with traffic court, driving prohibitions, and those charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle under the Criminal Code. She has dealt with Interlock Ignition Program reconsiderations for clients that have received extensions. She has also assisted those that have been referred to the Remedial Driving Program as result of receiving alcohol-related driving infractions prior to 2016. Laura has worked with and assisted senior counsel on trials and with trial-work in various areas of criminal law, including sexual assaults.
Facing a criminal charge or driving infraction under the Motor Vehicle Act can bring a feeling of uncertainty to a person. Laura understands the difficulties and distress that her clients often face in these circumstances. Laura approaches all matters with care and compassion. She strongly believes that her clients should not feel alone or lost. Facing charges of any kind is stressful. Laura works hard to ensure that her clients are aware of the progress of their case, and chooses to have her clients involved so that they understand the process.
