    Daniel Chang, J.D.

    ARTICLED STUDENT

Daniel was born in South Korea and spent most of his life in Toronto. As the only child of immigrant parents, Daniel has first-hand experience with the challenges of navigating the Canadian legal system, especially the difficulties stemming from financial limits, language barrier, or cultural differences. His desire to help those who have trouble accessing or understanding the justice system motivated him to pursue a career as a lawyer.

Daniel’s focus during law school was gaining practical experience while promoting access to justice. He volunteered extensively with Student Legal Services of Edmonton throughout all three years of law school, providing free legal assistance to Edmonton’s low-income community. He participated in multiple projects as a volunteer caseworker in his first year, developing his skills by taking notes for lawyers during client meetings, drafting a demand letter, and representing an individual charged with assault. In his second and third years, he worked for the organization’s Criminal Law Project as a full-time caseworker during the summers, and supervised volunteer caseworkers throughout the school year. He routinely appeared before the Alberta Court of Justice, advocating at pre-trial hearings, trials, and sentencings for a variety of matters including drug offences, violent offences, and impaired driving.

Prior to law school, Daniel worked in a variety of fields including competitive breakdancing, baking, and teaching. Having worked with a wide spectrum of individuals and communities, he is equipped with the awareness, adaptability, and the communication skills required to understand your needs and act in your best interests.
